While I was sitting there at my desk pulling together all the different elements in ‘Love, Anger & Betrayal’, Liz Smith was out on the streets filming Just Stop Oil activists ‘crossing the line’ right from the start (with Marcus Decker and Morgan Trowland scaling the QE2 Dartford Crossing in October 2022) through to some of the last ‘slow marches’ at the end of last year.
It’s an extraordinary snapshot, both of the JSO campaign itself and of the impact of the Government’s more and more draconian efforts to crush such effective civil disobedience.
Out of which emerged Defend Our Juries — with Liz on hand to capture the drama and the surrealism of Trudi Warner’s inspiring ‘sign-holding’ reminding jurors of their “absolute right to make decisions on the basis of their conscience”.
So what a delight it was to sit down with Liz and ‘swap notes’ about our respective Just Stop Oil/Defend Our Jury’s endeavours – with both of us acknowledging what an extraordinary privilege it’s been to work with so many wonderful campaigners.
